During 2023 Kerswell Farm grew by 4.5 acres! We’ve acquired some glorious mature broadleaf woodland below our lakes where there are hundreds of beautiful trees, some really huge and old. Evocative and amazing shapes, you can imagine all sorts of creatures living in the many hollows and crevices. There were already a couple of established paths and we’ve added more to give variety, with clearings to wander through as well as the woodland trails. Lots of flora and fauna to enjoy – we’re discovering various plants including heathers and orchids that don’t grow in other parts of the farm. There are many colourful fungi, lichens, ferns and mosses too, and the birds are amazing! We recommend using the Merlin app for identifying the many different songs you’ll hear.
Hazel dormice live in the woodland; a recent study showed a healthy dormouse population so we’re keen to protect them and give them the peace to thrive. Deer tracks are evident everywhere, the dainty tracks of the roe and some impressively large red deer trails. There’s also clear evidence of foxes and badgers being around. The autumn rains have made some areas wet and muddy and the deer aren’t helping!
We know that guests will want to explore but please keep dogs on a lead. Barbed wire fences are sometimes not immediately visible and we’d hate for a dog to decide to chase a squirrel or a deer and to encounter a sharp fence.
We’ll all be discovering new plants, trees and animals throughout the changing seasons, a delight for all the senses and a true haven of peace and tranquillity. Enjoy Bonnyford Wood.
